DAS WANDERLUST deal in sparky indie lunacy that translates to the big stage (their last Manchester appearance was at Retro Bar) rather better than expected, and the early arrivers down the front love them. We cheer louder than Cardiff, apparently. Good. Singer Laura does very much have the look about her of someone who's completely bonkers, doing an odd little marching dance behind a keyboard which emanates Krautrock disco noises, and staring at nothing in a faintly disturbing way. The flute-wielding bassist, on loan from the equally deranged Retro Spankees fits right in. Taking vague cues from Bis and the day-glo end of post-punk their tunes are short, sharp, sweet nuggets of pop-gone-wrong and are shamblingly self deprecating. "This last song's not very good, probably a six out of ten" says Laura. "No, I like that one, definitely an 8" counters bass girl. But as they sung earlier, "perception is a funny thing, it makes you think you're shit when you're really quite good". Which they are - in a loveably shit way.
